High water pressure can make showers feel strong, but it also increases stress throughout the plumbing system. Pipes, mixer cartridges, toilet valves, geyser components and flexible connectors all experience greater force, and pressure surges can turn a weak point into a sudden burst.

Static pressure versus flowing pressure

Static pressure is measured when water is not being used. Flowing pressure is measured while fixtures operate. Both help explain how the system behaves under normal conditions.

How pressure damages pipework

Higher pressure increases force on pipe walls and fittings. Repeated cycles can fatigue joints, while water hammer adds short sharp surges.

Common warning signs

Pressure problems often show themselves before a major burst.

  • Banging when valves close.
  • Frequent flexible-hose or mixer failures.
  • Toilets and valves that become noisy.
  • Leaks appearing at multiple fittings.

Municipal pressure changes

Supply pressure can vary by area, elevation and time of day. A property that was previously acceptable may experience higher pressure after network changes.

Booster pumps, borehole systems and tanks require correct controls. Faulty switches, blocked pressure vessels or incorrect settings can expose plumbing to damaging pressure.

How pressure is tested

A plumber connects a suitable gauge at an appropriate point and may monitor pressure over time. Single readings do not always capture intermittent spikes.

Pressure-reducing valves

A correctly selected pressure-reducing valve can control excessive incoming pressure. It must be installed in the right location and maintained because valves can wear or become blocked.

Water-hammer control

Slow-closing valves, secure pipe supports and arrestors may be used where sudden flow changes create shock. The cause should be diagnosed rather than merely masking noise.

Repairing the burst is not enough

Where high pressure caused the failure, replacing the split section without controlling pressure leaves the new repair and the rest of the system exposed.

Is strong shower pressure proof of a problem? Not by itself. Pressure should be measured and considered with system ratings and symptoms.
